The Edwin A Grimshaw Collection of American
Grimshaw Family Lines

Assembled in 1979-1980 from a Mailout to Grimshaws

Home Page

In 1979 Ed Grimshaw of Lake Charles, Louisiana, purchased a book of Grimshaw family information offered by Beatrice Bayley. In an effort to trace his family history, Ed sent inquiries to the nearly 600 Grimshaws listed in Bayley's book. He received 81 responses to his inquiry letter. These responses, received in 1979 and 1980, comprise a valuable record of Grimshaw immigrants to the U.S. and their descendants. In many cases, the information in Ed’s collection serves as the best available "starting point" for further research into the various American Grimshaw family lines.

The objective of this webpage is to present a summary of the Grimshaw family history information in Ed’s collection of responses. Where possible, links are provided to other pages on this website where the family lines are described more completely. A tabulation of the responses received, and the text of each of the letters, are presented in a companion webpage.

Many of the responses identified Grimshaw family lines that had not yet been documented on this website at the time they were received from Ed Grimshaw. These "indicated immigrant" families have been included on a companion webpage along with other similar apparent immigrants who were not initially identified.

Those who are interested in more information on this valuable collection of Grimshaw information are encouraged to contact Ed at his e-mail address: egrimshaw@bigfoot.com. Also, Ed has provided information for his own Grimshaw ancestors, Zacharia and Ellen (Wilde) Grimshaw, who immigrated to North America (Canada). They and their family are described on a companion webpage.

Ed Grimshaw deserves most of the credit for this webpage. Not only did he obtain the information in the first place, but he also made it available to the website author for inclusion on this website. Thanks go to Ed for providing this invaluable Grimshaw family history data and for helping with the webpage.

Beatrice Bayley Reference1 on Grimshaws in the U.S.

In January 1979, Beatrice Bayley sent a solicitation letter to the Grimshaws then living in the U.S. for a publication on American Grimshaw families. A copy of the letter is shown in Figure 1. A portion of the title page of the publication is included in Figure 2.

Ed Grimshaw’s Inquiry Letter

Ed sent inquiries to the 593 Grimshaw entries in the Bayley reference. A total of 81 responses were received (about 14%, which is probably typical for this type of inquiry). A copy of Ed’s inquiry letter is shown in Figure 4.

Responses to Ed's Inquiry Letter

Ed Grimshaw placed the 81 responses in a file organized generally by state or geographic region. All 81 of the response letters are tabulated in a companion webpage, and the contents of the letters are also presented.

Ed provided a copy of most of his file of responses to the website author in late 1999. Sequential numbers (EAG-1 to EAG-74) were then assigned to the responses in the order in which they arrived in the file. A cover form was also provided for each of the responses, with entry space for the name, address and other information on the respondent as well as space for sketching family trees and recording other relevant information.

Most of the 81 responses were then tabulated, rated (A,B,C,D) based on the completeness of the family history information provided, and sorted by rating. The resulting tabulation is shown in Figure 5. Summaries of the family tree and other information are being prepared and added to this webpage, with the most complete entries presented earlier (highest rating first).

Grimshaw, Edwin Armand,  Lake Charles, LA, (EAG-1)

Ed Grimshaw bought the Bayley book and sent out the inquiry letters whose responses are the subject of this webpage. Apparently Ed’s grandparents, Zacharia and Nellie (Wilde) Grimshaw emigrated from England to Alberta, where they died in Strathmore. Their son, George Grimshaw, immigrated to the U.S. and was married in Minnesota. George and his wife, Annie (Franssen) Grimshaw are buried in Lafayette, Louisiana. Ed Grimshaw, the son of George and Annie, continues to live in Louisiana. Ed has provided information on his Grimshaw line is summarized below (Ed's information has been updated in 2001 and is more complete than the 1980 information.) Additional information on Ed's family line is provided on a companion webpage.

Grimshaw, Stanley R., South China, ME, (EAG-7)

Stanley provided a considerable amount of information about a line of Grimshaws who lived in the area around Augusta, Maine. Stanley’s letter is as follows (some words are inferred due to being cut of during photocopying.)

South China, Maine

Oct. 26, 1979

Dear Mr. Grimshaw

I admire your efforts in tracing … our genealogy, but am afraid I have little to offer. Due to a difference [in] our religion, I know very little about my father’s family.

I believe he had a twin brother, at least he had a brother named Joseph, whereabouts unknown. He had two sisters: Elizabeth Welsh [John]; Annie Goodwin [Harry]. Elizabeth lived in Dover, N.H. [She] had a large family, only three that [I] knew. John, Velma & Raymond.

Annie lived in Kennebunk, Maine. [She] had two children, I never met.

My father, John, born 1888, died 1950. My mother, Carrie, born 1891, died 1946. Lived in Augusta most of life.

There were eight members of my family.

Donald, born 1913, wife Alexandria Roussell, son Gary born July 1940.

Mildred Zientara [Thadius], born 1915, no family.

Stanley, 307-17, wife Pauline Hemphill, 5-21-17, daughter, Sandra Thomas, 5-10-44, son, Richard, 11-18-47.

Marjorie Dennett [Donald], born 1919, 5 children.

Jane Cunningham [Damon], 4 boys.

Madeline – unmarried.

Dorothy Hart [Byron], 3 children.

Gail Woodward [Edwin], son Michael, dau Brenda.

Four of us are g-parents, if you want the latest up-date.

Our whole family live in and around Augusta. Afraid I have lost track of the girls birthdates. Since the death of our parents I see very little of the girls, but Donald & I are very close. Perhaps he has some further information for you.

Good luck in your endeavor.

Stanley R. Grimshaw

Unfortunately, there is no indication of the roots of the family in England or who the immigrant ancestor was. No other information has yet been found on this line of Grimshaws by the website author. The following descendant chart has been prepared based on the information in Stanley’s letter.

Grimshaw, Miss Marian, Hawthorne, NJ (EAG-9)

One of the most complete and valuable responses to Ed's inquiries was provided by Miss Marian Grimshaw, then living in Hawthorne, NJ. Her response covers the lines of Grimshaws who immigrated to the Paterson, NY area from Macclesfield, Lancashire and were engaged primarily in the silk weaving business. This line is described in a companion webpage. Miss Marian's letter is shown below, followed by a descendant chart that was prepared based on the information she included with her letter.

72 May Street

Hawthorne, NJ 07506

Nov. 27 1979

Mr. E.A. Grimshaw

A few lines in reply to your request about the Grimshaws. The Grimshaws originally came from France to England and settled on the Isle of Man. My branch of the family were in the textile business, and came from Lancaster. They settled in Macclesfield about 20 miles from Manchester. My Great Grandfather Hugh Grimshaw and his children were silk manufacturers as were his brothers and their children.

I am enclosing two charts, one of my Great grandfather and one of his brothers. The reason for this is one of Great Grandfather’s brothers and his sons build and ran a silk mill in Paterson New Jersey in 1872. I am also enclosing a small sketch of the Grimshaw coat of arms. I was born in Macclesfield, Eng. myself and would like some idea of where Droylsdon and Strathmore are located.

I would like to know if you would be kind enough to send me the name of the place to send for a list of names as I know there are some in Connecticut that are related to us. So as not to give you the impression that I know a great deal about England I was only two years old when I came here. My brother Frederick of [redacted] won’t be writing as he doesn’t have any of this data and I told him I was sending it to you. If you could let me know what kind of information you are interested in, I will try to help if I can. P.S. Sorry one of the charts is a little messy, but drop me a line if you need to know more.

Sincerely, yours,

Miss Marian Grimshaw

Mary C. Grimshaw sent a letter to Edwin with brief information on the family of her deceased husband, Joseph Grimshaw. Except for his father, John, no information was provided on Joseph’s ancestry, or the identity of the Grimshaw immigrant. However, Phyllis Frankenfeld has identified this line as descending from John and Mary Grimshaw, immigrants to Philadelphia. The line descending from these immigrants is described on a companion webpage.

Grimshaw, John M., Baltimore, MD, (EAG-22)

John provided a very clear and complete chart for his family. His father, John S. Grimshaw, was born in 1881 and apparently married first in England, where some his children were born (and remained.) John and his wife then apparently immigrated to Michigan, where he married a second time and had additional children. John’s letter reads as follows:

14 N. Ellwood Ave.

Baltimore, MD 21224

March 28, 1980

Mr. Edwin Grimshaw

The attached copy of my family tree will show you, that we apparently are of a different branch.

My recollections are somewhat vague. Some of the dated might not be exact. As you can see, our family is not very cohesive.

My father, John S., was from Hull in Yorkshire. He was a dairyman.

I, being the only Grimshaw in Baltimore, get some input from people as to its uncommonness. I do know it is not uncommon in New England. There are quite a lot of Grimshaws in Nova Scotia & New Brunswick.

Somewhere back in King Arthur’s time, we may have a common ancestor. I wish you luck in your research.

Dear Ed –

I’ve enclosed what I know of my father’s family. Can’t see where it ties together in USA but perhaps you can find an English connection.

If you receive any info that relates to my ‘family tree’ please advise me. Also I will reimburse you for a listing of the Grimshaws that live in New Jersey. That listing would be of signifcant help to me.

Keep me advised, please of how you progress.

Best Regards,

Chris

The following descendant chart has been prepared using the handwritten chart provided by Chris in his response to Ed Grimshaw’s letter of inquiry.

John Oliver Grimshaw received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Architecture from The Pennsylvania State College. He was a member of AIA in Florida. He was a Lieutenant, Junior Grade, during World War II and circumnavigated the world in a U.S. Liberty Ship.

Christopher Kieper Grimshaw received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from The Pennsylvania State University. He has a CPA in Maryland and Florida. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps.

A very complete biography of Dr. Oliver Grimshaw has been found in the New Jersey State Library and is shown below. A copy (but not including bibliographic information) was also included in Chris’ response letter to Ed Grimshaw's inquiry.

Oliver Grimshaw, M.D.

Among the younger professional men of Goucester county none has attained a higher standard of excellence or a greater degree of success than the physician who is the subject of this review, and who has been a resident of Swedesboro ever since he entered upon his professional career.

Dr. Grimshaw was born in Woodstown, New Jersey, December 18, 1860, and is a son of Hugh and Rebecca (Pierson) Grimsahw, both natives of Gloucester county and of English descent. At an early period in the history of this country his ancestors engaged in the manufacture of woolen goods in Birmingham, England, whence the grandfather of our subject removed to Gloucester county in the beginning of the nineteenth century, locating at Mullica Hill, but soon afterword removing to Harrisonville.

When the Doctor was a year old his parents took up their residence in Mullica Hill, where he acquired a good common-school education. In 1878 he began teaching and for several years followed that calling, in which so many of the prominent business and professional men of this land have begun their career. He subsequently matriculated in Hahnemann Medical College, of Philadelphia, at which he was graduated in 1890. On the completion of his professional course of study he located in Swedesboro.

Dr. Grimshaw was married November 17, 1892, to Miss Mary Miller Ford, a daughter of George T. Ford, of Swedesboro. They have two beautiful children, Marion and Edith, and have a charming home, in the central part of the town, – one of the finest residences in the place. In politics the Doctor is a Republican, and while not a politician he takes an active interest in the success of his party. He is a member of the board of education of the Swedesboro district, and believes in securing the very best talent available to train the youthful mind.

Grimshaw, Charles Vernon, Wyandotte, MI, (EAG-39)

Charles Grimshaw wrote Ed with information on a Grimshaw line that settled in Missouri after immigrating from England. An interesting feature of this line is the implication that the Grimshaw immigrant was the illegitimate offspring of a member of British royalty. Charles’ letter is as follows:

3595 20th St.

Wyandotte, Mi. 48192

April 20, 1980

Edwin Armand Grimshaw,

I doubt very much if we are in any way related. However we have acquired this information on the history of our Grimshaw name. It has been copied from "St. Francois County, Missouri Pioneers – Their Ancestors and Descendants, Bicentennial Edition, 1776-1976, by Francis Marion Thurman, published by Family Histories, Inc., Portland, Oreg. 97203."

My father and grandparents came from St. Francois and Jefferson Counties in Missouri.

Charles Grimshaw (my father) now living in Lincoln Park, Mi. told me his father (my grandfather) (Henry Grimshaw) had two brothers, George & Nathan who were fishermen in Wisconsin. Saw George once.

William Grimshaw (my uncle, deceased) mentioned he was a relative of a Lord Higginbotton living in England.

Perhaps some of this information may be beneficial. If I can be of any future help please don’t hesitate to write.

Sincerely,

Charles Vernon Grimshaw

A good deal of information on this Grimshaw line was provided by Charles Grimshaw from a local history of St. Francois County, Missouri. The information provided is shown below.

Thurman, Francis M., 1976?, St. Francois County, Missouri Pioneers – Their Ancestors and Descendants, Bicentennial Edition, 1776-1976: Portland, OR, Family Histories, Inc., unk. p.

Mary Ann Roberts, the daughter of Francis Marion and Matilda Roberts, was born in Jefferson County in 1868. She went to school at Prospect School in Jefferson County, and married Henry Grimshaw who had emigrated from England with his mother. "Grandma" Grimshaw lived in the Primrose District and was buried there.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: There was a story current about 1900 to the effect that Grandma Grimshaw was the former unacknowledged wife of a member of Royalty. Henry, her son, was son of this Royal Family. The story goes that the Royal Family paid their way to America to get rid of them, and they settled in the Primrose District.

It has been established that letters were written from England to Grandma, and offered her a castle and titles if she would return and pay the 20,000 pounds to bail the castle and title out of debt. This was a very ill-timed offer since a farmer of that period and place had trouble raising twenty dollars, let alone the 20,000 pounds.

It has never been established whether or not some enterprising citizen of England made a bona fide offer, or if it was a scheme to bilk a poor innocent farmer of his hard-earned savings.

Most of the Grimshaw children were born in Jefferson County. Henry worked in the lead smelter in Herculaneum until he was poisoned by the gas fumes. The house they lived in burned, destroying all the family possessions, and they moved to the head of Pike Run, across the little dry creek from Coonville School. Bertha, Ethel, Frank, and William were all born in Jefferson County before the house burned. Henry and Mary and children moved to the "Appleberry" place on the East Fork of Pike Run, a short way from Coonville School Charles and Walter were born on this place.

NOTE: Ethel writes from Detroit in 1972, that she was always deathly afraid the "ghosts" of the departed slaves would arise from the ancient slave graveyard located at the top of the old orchard. She isn’t clear what she expected the "spirits" to accomplish.

Frank died while the family lived across from Coonville School, and Walter died shortly after birth. Charles lives in Detroit Michigan (1974).

When Ethel was twelve years of age the family moved to Cantwell (Flat River,) where Bertha married John Colson. John Colson worked in the lead mines and when the Grimshaw family moved to Detroit, about 1917, John and Bertha went with them. When Ethel was seventeen she married John Yennie, a lad from the Silver Springs and Pike Run area.

NOTE: John Yennie was a ward of "Grandpa" Asa Stephens of the Pike Run Stephens-Shannon family.

Ethel and John lived in the Ecorse district of Detroit, and both Mary and Henry died there. Ethel now lives in the home of her daughter, Lorraine and family, John having died several years ago.

GRIMSHAW FAMILY HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY

Bertha (Grimshaw) Colson died in 1970 in Detroit, as did her husband soon after. Their daughter, Iris, still lives there and never married.

William never married and never really recovered from the gunshot wound received in a wedding near Coonville School. (See shotgun wedding at Coonville School). He was once "sweet" on Laura Hodge who lived with her father in the valley below the Sanders place. Laura wouldn’t have anything to do with him because he wasn’t religious enough. William died in Detroit, Michigan in 1962.

There are many grandchildren of Henry and Mary living in the Detroit area. Henry died in 1931 and Mary in 1944.

Grimshaw, John Clark, (EAG-45)

John Clark Grimshaw and Gene Grimshaw (next entry, EAG-46) were both descendants of the "Texas" line of Grimshaws, which is the subject of a companion webpage. John’s letter appears below.

April 23, 1980

Dear Edwin,

My name is John Clark Grimshaw. I am James R. Grimshaw’s son. My father passed away Dec. 9, 1974.

I was very happy to hear from you. As you know, it’s not very often one gets a letter from a Grimshaw!

I have enclosed copies of the limited information I have. This information has been given to me by two cousins that have researched our family. They have made quite a bit of progress into our family tree and I’m sure we must be related somewhere down the line. I suggest you write them if you haven’t, for they would be of great help. Their addresses are:

George Grimshaw

P.O. Box 2239

California City, California 93505

and

Boyd Grimshaw

1216 Westwood Dr., Apt. 614

Rosenberg, Texas 77471

Phone 232-4934

I am going to send them a copy of the tree you sent me to be sure they got one. They may contact you later to exchange information.

Edwin, we had a Grimshaw family reunion in DeLeon, Texas last summer that went real well. I haven’t heard any plans but we should have another this year. I would sure like to meet you and this would give you a chance to meet many Grimshaws and exchange information. Good luck in your research and perhaps we can meet sometime soon.

Best wishes!

John Clark Grimshaw

The information provided by John is summarized in the descendant chart below; a more complete version is given on the webpage on the "Texas" line of Grimshaws.

Interestingly, John also provided copies of records of the two Grimshaws who served in the U.S. Revolutionary War – William Grimshaw, who served in Hazen’s Regiment, and John Grimshaw, who was in Clark’s Illinois Regiment of the Virginia State Troops – which he apparently obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. These records are also shown on a companion webpage on William Grimshaw, Revolutionary War Veteran.

Gene Grimshaw, the other descendant of the "Texas" line of Grimshaws,  sent Ed the following letter:

Route 1

Desdemona, TX 76445

April 14, 1980

Mr. Grimshaw,

Our family lines, as far as we know them, do not join. However, I am working on my genealogy, and we might be able to help one another at some future time. Therefore, I am including a brief cart on my Grimshaw line. This might also help you eliminate a few of my bunch from your list.

Best wishes for success on your project and let me know if I can help some way.

Sincerely,

Gene Grimshaw

Grimshaw, Paul R., Logan, UT, (EAG-48)

Paul, a descendant of Lawrence and Mary (Duckworth) Grimshaw, sent the following letter to Edwin:

1520 Highland Drive

Logan, Utah 84321

May 12, 1980

Dear Mr. Grimshaw:

I have compared your Grimshaw lines with mine. There are many common names in our family lines. I am enclosing a copy of what we call a pedigree chart that may help lead to something we can tie together.

My Grandfather Grimshaw came to the United States from England in the 1850’s. He settled in Southern Utah in Beaver, Beaver County. He had 13 children; my father was #12. There is only one of father’s brothers and sisters living; he lives in Brigham City, Utah and was 84 years old last February. We have an active family organization and the descendants of my father’s brothers and sisters number several hundred. All of the Grimshaws in Utah that we know are related. We also have Grimshaw relatives in most states of the Western United States

I am planning a trip to England in June of this year. My wife and my brother and his wife from Cedar City, Utah are going to check on some of the areas in England from which our forefathers originated. My brother has a daughter and family in Mildenhall, England. My wife and I have a daughter and family living near Nurenburg, Germany. I will take a copy of your family tree to see if any of the names or places may fit with some of our lines.

Thank you for your letter and your interest in genealogy which is also an interest of mine. Success in your efforts.

Sincerely,

Paul R. Grimshaw

5/17/80

I understand you have had some heavy rains in the last day or so. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Paul included and ancestor chart for himself, which shows his lineage back to Lawrence and Mary Grimshaw. The following descendant chart is derived from Paul’s ancestor chart:

Grimshaw, Sally Ruth, Sonoma, CA, (EAG-54)

Sally Grimshaw sent Ed Grimshaw an ancestor chart for her grandfather, William R. Grimshaw, apparently without an accompanying letter. The chart was prepared by her father, Robert B. Grimshaw, and included a notation that William’s father, John Grimshaw, immigrated to America with his parents, Henry and Mary (Mann) Grimshaw in 1843. The information provided in the ancestor chart is summarized in the descendant diagram below. (Henry,s son, Henry, was added based on the information provided below the descendant chart.)

Henry Grimshaw (2 Feb 1815, Yorkshire – 26 Nov 1873, Genesee, WI) & Mary Mann (10 Jun 1815, Calvary, England – 6 Sep 1903) Married 14 Feb 1836.

|---John Grimshaw (8 May 1842, Farsley, England - 30 Nov 1917, Elroy, WI) & Jean Marr Robb (24 Feb 1847, Oakfield, NY - 28 Mar 1913, Elroy, WI) Married 14 Apr 1869.

|---|---William R Grimshaw (26 Jan 1870, North Prairie, WI - 14 May 1940, Elroy, WI) Married 18 Sep 1845.

|---|---|---Robert B Grimshaw (14 Jun 1900, Elroy, WI - ) & Maud M Wright Married 15 Sep 1923.

|---|---|---|---Robert Jared Grimshaw (28 Oct 1924, Sacramento, CA - )

|---|---|---|---Sally Ruth Grimshaw, M.D. (23 Sep 1928, Sacramento, CA - )

|---Henry Grimshaw

It seems likely that Henry Grimshaw was descended from the Edward and Dorothy (Raner) Grimshaw line (the "Yorkshire" Grimshaw line,) since Henry and his wife were both born in Yorkshire (Mary in Calvary,) and their son, John, was born in Farsley, Yorkshire. This line is described in a companion webpage. Unfortunately, Henry and his spouse, Mary, are not shown in the descendant charts on that webpage.

Information on the Henry and Mary (Mann) Grimshaw line was discovered by Robert Grimshaw of Modesto, CA and provided to the website author in 2001. This information, an entry in the publication, "Freemasonry in Wisconsin," is shown below. Thanks go to Bob Grimshaw for providing this following information on John Grimshaw's family.

GRIMSHAW, John, a successful merchant of Elroy, Juneau County, Wis., was born May 8, 1842, at Farsley, Yorkshire, England. His father was Henry Grimshaw, a woolen manufacturer, who came to America in the spring of 1843, and located on a farm in Genesee, Waukesha County, Wis., where he was joined by his wife and son in the fall of the same year. His mother’s maiden name was Mary Mann. He received his education in the district schools of Genesee, while working on his father’s farm. In 1865 he secured employment with John Gill, at North Prairie, Waukesha County, in the hardware business, and also served as assistant postmaster. Two years thereafter, September 4, 1867, he removed to New Lisbon, Juneau County, Wis., and entered the hardware business with Mr. Gill, under the firm name of Gill & Co. In 1872 the firm took in his brother Henry as a third partner, and opened a branch store in Elroy, Juneau County, Wis., under the firm name of Gill & Grimshaw Bros. Mr. Grimshaw sold his interest in the New Lisbon Firm December 1, 1874, and purchased the interest of John Gill in the Elroy store, removing from New Lisbon to Elroy to conduct the business with his brother, as the firm of Grimshaw Bros., with which he is still actively connected. He has been vice-president of the Citizens’ Bank of Elroy since 1897. In politics, Mr. Grimshaw is a Democrat. He served as Supervisor for the Town of Plymouth, Juneau County, in 1876, and also represented his ward in Elroy as Supervisor from 1884 to 1880. He was elected a member of the Assembly from Juneau County for the years 1887 and 1888.

Mr. Grimshaw has a very creditable Masonic record. He was initiated an Entered Apprentice in Juneau Lodge, No. 103, at New Lisbon, Wis., February 14, 1870, passed to the degree of Fellow Craft March 17, 1870, and raised to the degree of Master Mason April 9 of the same year. He was elected Junior Deacon in 1873, and Junior Warden the following year. He demitted from Juneau Lodge September 6, 1875, and became a charter member of Elroy Lodge, No. 202, at Elroy, Wis. He served as Senior Deacon of the Lodge during the years 1875, 1876, 1880 and 1881. He was elected Senior Warden in 1877, and was a Steward in 1878. He was then elected Worshipful Master, and filled that office during the years 1879, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1888 and 1894. He has also been a Trustee of the Lodge. In March, 1893, the brethren of the Lodge presented him a Past Master’s jewel, in recognition of his long and faithful service in the interest of the Masonic order. Mr. Grimshaw was elected Grand Junior Warden of the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin in June, 1894, and he has attended most of the sessions of the Grand lodge for the past twenty-five years. He was representative of the Grand Lodge of South Dakota near the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin from 1895 to 1900. The Capitular degrees were conferred upon him in Mauston Chapter, No. 33, at Mauston, Wis., in the years 1872 and 1873. He demitted from the Mauston Chapter March 15, 1895, and became a charter member of Elroy Chapter, No. 71, of which he was King during the years 1895, 1896 and 1897, and High Priest during the years 1898, 1899 and 1900. He was anointed to the order of High Priesthood in Milwaukee, Wis., February 16, 1898. The Cryptic degrees were conferred upon him in Mauston Council Royal and Select Masters, in 1878, and the orders of Knighthood in Fort Winnebago Commandery, No. 4, at Portage, Wis., May 12, 1881. He demitted from Fort Winnebago Commandery June 1, 1884, and affiliated with St. John Commandery, No. 21, at Reedsburg, Wis., August 14, 1889. He was elected Generalissimo of the Commandery in ___ 188_. In 18__ Mr. Grimshaw received the various degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, in Wisconsin Consistory at Milwaukee. He became a charter member of Plymouth Charter, No. 31, Order of the Eastern Star, in March, 1892, and his entire family are members. Mrs. Jennie M. Grimshaw was Treasurer of Plymouth Chapter during the years 1892 and 1893, Associate Matron during the year 1894, and Worthy Matron during the year 1897. She was appointed Grand Electa for the year 1899. Miss Dora E. Grimshaw held the office of Ruth in Plymouth Chapter for two years, and Miss Ruth Grimshaw was elected to the office of Associate Conductress for the year 1900. Mr. Grimshaw’ son, William R. Grimshaw, is a member of Elroy Lodge, No. 202. He received the Capitular degrees in Mauston Chapter, No. 33, and demitted in 1895 and affiliated with Elroy Chapter, No. 71.

Grimshaw, R. G., Lovettsville, VA, (EAG-67)

Richard Grimshaw sent a very complete handwritten descendant chart showing his lineage back to Henry Grimshaw, who was born in 1467 and died in 1507. This Henry is in the 8th generation after Walter, progenitor of the oldest recorded Grimshaw family. Richard included the following note with the chart:

Ballymar

Rt. 2, Box 60

Lovettsville, Virginia 22080

(no salutation)

I was looking through some papers recently and came across your note. I attach for your information my family tree. You will note that a number of my close relatives settled in the United States. If you can find any linkage I would be rather interested to know about it. I also have some more information if necessary

Sincerely,

R.G. Grimshaw

A descendant chart prepared from the information sent by Richard is shown below:

(in preparation)

The chart that Richard sent appears to include information from the earliest recorded Grimshaw family as well as the Pendle Forest line and the "Irish" Grimshaw line. These three lines are the subject of companion webpages on this website.
