John James and Mary Ann Grimshaw (Tentative Identifications)

John James Grimshaw was the third child (first son) of George and Charlotte (Menard) Grimshaw, who raised their family on Wolfe Island, Ontario, at the head of the Saint Lawrence River. John and Mary Ann emigrated to the area around Richland Center, Wisconsin in about 1862, perhaps at the same time as John's father, George, and two brothers, Alexander Eli Grimshaw and Eli George Grimshaw arrived at the Oakdale area, further north in Wisconsin. The descendants of John and Mary Ann comprise an important Grimshaw family line in the U.S. that includes the author of this website. Mary Ann died in November 1880. Fifty-one-year-old John James remarried the following year (May 1881) to Margaret (Newburn) Daughtee, age 47. John James and Margaret are buried with their first spouses in separate cemeteries. John James and Mary Ann and buried with their grandson, Clark, in Dayton Corners cemetery.

Several pages from an old photo album (see companion webpage) in the possession of Kernit Grimshaw in South Dakota, which was apparently assembled by William and Nettie Grimshaw, had pictures from their relatives in Wisconsin. These pages contain photos that are believed to include John James and Mary Ann and a number of their descendants, but the hypothesized identifications have not been verified.

Family Origins

John James Grimshaw was born on August 1, 1829 on Wolfe Island, Ontario. A copy of his baptism record, from St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, is shown in the image below. The record reads as follows:

John James' two-year-old sister, Henrietta, was baptized on the same date as indicated by Entry 76 of the record.

Mary Ann Mahoney was born in County Cork, Ireland in about 1822 and had been married previously. Her maiden name may have been Mulvaney, but this has not been confirmed. Apparently her first husband (and one child, or perhaps twins) perished on the emigration voyage from Ireland and were buried at sea. John and Mary Ann apparently met and married on Wolfe Island. And apparently Mary Ann had a daughter, Eliza Mahoney, whom she brought to her marriage to John.

John and Mary Ann had seven additional children, all of whom were born on Wolfe Island, with the possible exception of the youngest. A descendant chart for John and Mary Ann is shown below. Summary Descendant Chart of John James and Mary Ann (Mahoney) Grimshaw (Also Showing John James’ Parents and Siblings). It is likely that "Lida", shown as the youngest child, is actually Eliza (or Elizabeth), the oldest child, who was brought to the marriage by Mary Ann from a previous marriage. The indicated age for Mary Ann is obviously incorrect.

As noted, John and Mary Ann had seven children, but the twins, Isiah and Mary Charlotte, died within a month after birth. The remaining five children grew to adulthood, and all but one (Lida) are known to have married and had children of their own. A sizeable family tree has sprung from the John and Mary Ann line of Grimshaws. Webpages have been developed for the following children:

Immigration to Wisconsin

In about 1862 (when son George Thomas was about age 13, according to census records¹) John and Mary Ann migrated to Wisconsin with their family. A Declaration of Intention to Become a Citizen² was filed by John in 1869 (see the image below). They settled in Richland County, Wisconsin and remained there for the rest of their lives. They are buried in Dayton Corners cemetery, about __ miles west of Richland Center.

Where are Richland County and Richland Center?

John and Mary Ann settled in the Richland Center area of southwestern Wisconsin, about halfway from Madison to LaCrosse. A map showing this location is shown below. Also to be seen on the map are Oakdale and Camp Douglas, the area where John's brothers Alexander Eli and Eli George Grimshaw settled after immigration from Wolfe Island. Their father, George Grimshaw, also spent his final years in this area and is probably buried in the Oakdale cemetery.

George Thomas, oldest son of John and Mary Ann, and his wife, Aris (Ladd) Grimshaw (see companion webpage), were married in Wisconsin on December 5, 1869 and, at an unknown date after their marriage, left the state and migrated westward. They eventually settled in South Dakota, where they lived out their lives; they are buried at Presho. Their oldest son, William Allen also lived out his life in South Dakota and is buried with his wife, Hannah Jeanette ("Nettie"), at Reliance.

Many of the photos included on this webpage are from an album owned by Dorothy (Zastrow) Grimshaw, widow of Walter ("Doc") Grimshaw, one of William Allen’s sons. The album (called the "DZG Album" below) was apparently assembled by William and Nettie. The vast majority of photos in the album are of people and scenes in South Dakota. It has a total of 46 pages; unfortunately, with one or two exceptions, the photos are not labeled.

On at least five of the album pages, the character of the photos (some of them being miniature sepias rather than normal black-and-white photos), and the people in them, differ from the rest of the album. These photos are inferred to be pictures from ancestors back in Wisconsin, probably sent to George and Aris or to William Allen and Nettie from relatives there. An attempt has been made in the following sections to make "educated guesses" (but guesses nevertheless) on the identities of the relatives shown on these older photos.

A. Photos of John and Mary Ann Grimshaw and their Children

Figure 3 is a copy of Page 24 of the DZG Album; it contains nine photos, six of which are scenes of a construction site in South Dakota and three of which are portraits (note a, b and c on the figure). The men in the left portrait (Figure 3a; see also Figure 4 below) have been previously identified as Michael Henry and George Thomas Grimshaw on an identical photo in the possession of Bob Grimshaw. Bob, the son of William Clarence Grimshaw (see Figure 1), obtained the photo from his aunt, Irene, who identified the two gentlemen⁴. This photo, and the identification of Michael and George, provide the "key" for the interpretation of the other photos in the DZG Album.

The arrangement of the three portrait photos on the page in Figure 3 suggests that the creator of the album may have intended to show the entire (surviving) family of John and Mary Ann. The central position of Figure 3b suggests that the individuals may be John and Mary Ann, probably with their only (surviving) daughter, Lida (see also Figure 1). In this interpretation of the page, the boys (young men) in Figure 3c would then be John Etimer and William Alexander Grimshaw (see also Figure 5), although the photo is earlier than that of Michael Henry and George Thomas in Figure 3a. Although the photo is earlier, it seems clear that the two boys are not the same as the individuals in Figure 3a.

B. Another Line of Evidence for Identifying John and Mary Ann

Besides the known identities of Michael Henry and George Thomas, the probability seems very high that the girl with the couple in Figure 1 would be their daughter, Lida, and that the couple would be the parents of all the children shown on the page in Figure 3. There is another thread of evidence, also – the short stature of the apparent mother, Mary Ann.

One of the grandchildren of George and Aris Grimshaw was Lyra (Albert) Hodgin, who took a great deal of interest in the Grimshaw family history and served as the "chronicler" for the South Dakota Grimshaws before her death in 1996. The following quotations are from three of Lyra's chronicles, written at different times⁵:

The age spread of the men in Figures 3a and 4 cannot be reliably estimated (it would be 7 years according to Figure 2), but the four-year separation of John Etimer and William Alexander seems very reasonable (say, ages 8 and 12) for the boys in Figures 3c and 5.

Although the evidence is clearly "circumstantial", the interpretation of the photos in Figures 1, 3, 4, and 5 seems the most reasonable, given the source of the album, its likely creator(s) and the arrangement of the photos. The following pages carry this interpretation to other photos and individuals in the DZG Album.

C. Photos of the Daughter, Stepdaughter, and Daughters-in-Law of John and Mary Ann?

Page 9 of the DZG Album contain two portraits that seem to be of the same vintage or origin as the ones described above (Figure 6 below; note a and b). These portraits tempt further "educated guesswork" on the identities of the four women shown in the two portraits as members of the family of John and Mary Ann. In Figure 6b (see also Figure 7 below), the girl on the right appears to be the same as in Figures 3b and 4, namely, Lida (if the previous guess is correct.) The most "logical" candidate for her companion would, then, seem to be her 10-year-older half-sister, Eliza Mahoney – possibly they could be about 13 and 23 years old, respectively, in this photo.

This guess would then leave as the best candidates for the young women in Figure 6a (and Figure 8 below) two of John and Mary Ann's daughters-in-law. Again, "logical" association would indicate that they may be the two Norris sisters who were the wives of John Etimer (Eliza, the older by 5 years, on the right) and Michael Henry (Maria, on the left.). As shown in a subsequent photo (see Figure 22 below), daughter-in-law Aris Ladd, wife of George Thomas, is not a candidate for these photos. The only other daughter-in-law candidate is Jane Turner, wife of William Alexander.

D. Lida and John Etimer Grimshaw and More Daughter-in-Law Photos

Figure 9 (a to e), from page 35 of the DZG Album, contains more candidate photos of John and Mary Ann descendants. The boy (middle right) and young child photos are also candidates, but they are too young to identify, even by "educated guesswork." Figure 9a (and Figure 10) again shows Lida with her distinctive face and naturally wavy or curly hair, but at a considerably younger age than in previous figures. Figure 9e (and Figure 11) is clearly the same individual, probably John Etimer Grimshaw, as shown in Figures 2c and 5, but somewhat older.

The best candidates for the individuals in Figures 9b, 9c and 9d (see also Figures 12, 13 and 14) seem to be Eliza Norris, Maria W. Norris, and Jane Turner, the wives, respectively, of John Etimer, Michael Henry and William Alexander Grimshaw. Comparison of these portraits with Figure 8 indicates that Figures 12 and 13 are most likely the Norris sisters, Maria and Eliza, respectively. That would leave, then, Jane Turner as the best candidate for Figure 14. A "nice feature" of these interpretations (thus far) is that there appear to be the "right" number of spouses shown for the sons of John and Mary Ann.

E. Eliza (Norris) Grimshaw with Daughter; Sons of William Alexander and Jane (Turner) Grimshaw?

Figure 15, from p. 27 of DZG Album (see a; also shown in Figure 16) shows another photo of Eliza Norris (inferred) with a child who seems most likely to be her daughter, given how much they look alike. It could be her older daughter, May, but could also be one of the other four daughters, Anna, Sarah, Alice or Maud.

Given their closeness in age, it seems likely that the boys in Figure 15b are two of the four sons of William Alexander and Jane Turner, Thomas, Turner, Bert and Frank.

F. Mary Ann Mahoney and Group Photos of Wisconsin Grimshaws?

Figure 17, of p. 44 of DZG album, has six photos (a to f) that are probably of Wisconsin relatives of George and Aris. Figure 17b (see also Figure 18) is clearly the same woman identified in Figure 1 as Mary Ann (Mahoney) Grimshaw. The rest of the photos on this album page are group photos of people believed to be other Grimshaw ancestors in Wisconsin. G. George Thomas and Aris (Ladd) Grimshaw and Their Family

A photo of George Thomas (first child of John and Mary Ann) and his wife, Aris, is shown in Figure 24. This photo also clearly identifies the man on the right in Figures 3c and 4 above as George Thomas (not William Alexander) as discussed previously. In addition, this photo shows that, with one possible exception (Figure 21h), none of the women identified in the DZG Album is Aris (Ladd) Grimshaw. Figures 25 and 26 are group photos of the family of George and Aris, showing all the children as well as Aris, on two dates quite far apart.

George and Aris are the great-grandparents of the author of this website. A separate webpage has been prepared specifically for George and Aris Grimshaw and their descendants.

Descendants of William Alexander Grimshaw, Fifth Son of John and Mary Ann

A photo of William Alexander Grimshaw has not yet been obtained, but his children are shown in Figures 27 to 29 below. Two of the children, Thomas Henry and "Aunt Nell" (Cora Nellie) have been identified by Thomas T. Grimshaw, owner of the three photos in this section.

All of the figures include Thomas Henry Grimshaw, son of William Alexander and grandson of John and Mary Ann Grimshaw. Figure 27 shows Thomas Henry with his wife, Georgia (Lowery) Grimshaw and their young son, Ulmont. Figures 28 and 29 appear to contain the same seven people, one of whom is Thomas Henry. The woman next to Thomas Henry in Figure 28 and on the right side of Figure 29 has been identified as "Aunt Nell" (Cora Nellie) by Thomas T. Grimshaw, current owner of this set of photos.

Examination of the descendant chart in Figure 2 (near the top of this webpage) shows that Thomas Henry had 12 siblings, 8 of which survived to adulthood (total of 9 surviving children). Three of the 9 were men, and 6 were women. If it is assumed that the group photos include 7 of the 9 surviving children, the three men would then be Thomas Henry, Bert and Frank. Since Cora Nellie is the oldest woman in the photos, it is assumed that Bulah is absent. The following identifications are made tentatively on the basis of age and process of elimination:

It must be pointed out that the assumption that these individuals are all brothers and sisters is quite weak. Just about any of them, except Thomas, Cora Nellie, and Lovina could actually be spouses of the children of William Alexander. Also, it is very difficult to identify any of the men as the same as the boys preliminarily identified as William and Jane’s sons in the group photos in the DZG Album described earlier.

Michael Henry Grimshaw and His Descendants

Michael Henry, the youngest son of John and Mary Ann, and Maria Norris had six children, five of whom lived to adulthood. Figure 30 shows Michael and three of the surviving children, James, William and Irene. A closer view of William, with his wife Ragnhild (Eckstrom) Grimshaw, is shown in Figure 31. Finally, Figure 32 shows Michael Henry with his brother, George Thomas Grimshaw. This photo, the same as in Figure 3a and 4 near the top of this webpage, but from a different source, provided the "key" for the interpretation of the DZG Album, and the identification of John and Mary Ann and their children, as described in the early sections of this album.

Who Was Lida Grimshaw?

Mary Ann Mahoney was married in Ireland prior to her union with John James Grimshaw. Family lore indicates that she lost her husband and a child on the voyage to America from Ireland. But she had a living daughter, named Elizabeth or "Lida", before marrying John. Mary Ann's last names, besides Mahoney, include "Melvina" and "Lanahan", one of which was probably her maiden name. Cemetery records, as well as emails from Judy Tighe and Terry Micks, are shown below. They help shed light on Elizabeth, but some of the mystery around remains. Lyra (Albert) Hodgin's family stories (below the emails) also shed a bit of light on Elizabeth. The facts and conjectures about Elizabeth may be summarized as follows:

Mary Ann was apparently married when she left County Cork, Ireland, and the couple had an infant. The husband and infant perished during the voyage.
Mary Ann may have been pregnant during the voyage, as Elizabeth (Lida) was born in Montreal on Christmas Day, 1846 or 1847. Mary Ann brought Elizabeth to her marriage to John James Grimshaw. Elizabeth's surname at the time may have been Lanahan.
Although she was a step-daughter, apparently no distinction was made from the natural children in the marriage, as the family referred to her as though a true sibling.
Elizabeth married first George P Ellitson (or Elliotson) in 1861 (at age 14 or 15?) and had a child (William) Henry Ellitson, who married and apparently had three sons, William, Adelbert and George Ellitson. Henry died by drowning in 1922.
It is possible that Elizabeth was married to a man named Hunter before her marriage to Ellitson.
She united with the Christian church at Dayton Corners, Wisconsin in 1873.
She married second William R Ritchie in 1874 or 1875. It appears that no children came to this marriage. However, William, previously married to Isabella, apparently brought three stepsons, William, Hugh and James Ritchie, to the marriage. There may also have been a fourth stepson, Charles Ritchie. It is not known why Hugh may have had the surname "Adams".
She was postmistress in Richland Center for a number of years in the early 1900s.
Elizabeth died at Richwood, Richland County, on 5 August 1924 at age 77. She is buried in the Coumbe cemetery in southwest Richland County, near the Wisconsin River.

Final Resting Places

John James and Mary Ann are buried in the Dayton Corners cemetery in Richland County, Wisconsin, as are their son and daughter-in-law, John Etimer and Eliza (Norris) Grimshaw. A photo of John James and Mary Ann's headstone, from Bob Grimshaw, is shown in Figure 33. Also buried with them is Clark Grimshaw, their infant grandson, who died in 1879.

The website author made two trips to this cemetery, in ___ and again in 2006. The marble headstone has deteriorated significantly; it wasn't until the second visit to the gravesite that the author came to the realization that both John James, Mary Ann and Clark Grimshaw were all buried at the marker location. John James and Mary Ann Grimshaw's son, William Alexander Grimshaw, and members of his family are buried in Bowen Cemetery, which is north of Richland Center.

George Thomas and Aris (Ladd) Grimshaw are buried in the Presho cemetery in South Dakota.

John James married a second time after the death of Mary Ann, to Margaret (Newburn) Daughtee. The marriage occurred in 1881, when she was 47 and John was 51. Margaret is buried with her first husband, Robert S Daughtee, at Newburn Cemetery (also called Eagle Corners cemetery), which is located 1- to 12 miles southwest of Richland Center, within a few hundred yards of the Wisconsin River.

Coincidentally, at least four separate Grimshaw family lines immigrated to the same general area northwest of Madison, Wisconsin. These family locations are shown in the map below. The Richland Center Grimshaws were John James and Mary Ann (Mahoney) Grimshaw, who are descended from George and Charlotte (Menard) Grimshaw and are described on this webpage. The Oakdale & Camp Douglas Grimshaws are also descended from George and Charlotte and are described on a two companion webpages (Alexander Eli Grimshaw and Eli George Grimshaw). George Grimshaw, the father, is also apparently buried at Oakdale. The Ironton Grimshaws (Grunshaws) are described on a companion webpage. Latter-Day Descendants of John and Mary Ann Grimshaw: Thomas T., Robert W. and Thomas W. Grimshaw

Three descendants of John and Mary Ann have the Grimshaw surname and are cooperating to piece together the family history, with photos, of this branch of the family tree (our apologies to the many other descendants who are also contributing to the effort!) Figure 33 shows Thomas T. Grimshaw, descendant of William Alexander and Robert W. Grimshaw, descendant of Michael Henry. Figure 34 shows Robert with Thomas W. Grimshaw, descendant of George Thomas, and author of this website.
