George & Susan (Terriere) Grimshaw

Emigrants from England to New York and Then Wisconsin

Home Page

George and Susan (Terriere) Grimshaw were born in England in the early 1800s and immigrated to the U.S. sometime between 1835, when their second child was born in England, and 1838, when the third was born in New York. The couple lived in New York City and subsequently (in 1855) George, Susan and at least four of their children migrated to Wisconsin and settled in Milwaukee. George and Susan are buried in Forest Home Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Trudell Wright has identified George Grimshaw's parents tentatively as William and Agnes Grimshaw. He was apparently born in London in 1810.

1850 U.S. Census Record of George and Susan in New York

The 1850 U.S. Census for New York City found George, age 40, and Susan, 44, living in Washington Village, Kings County; a portion of the record is shown below. The family included Agnes, 17; Wm, 15; Emma, 12; George, 8; Susan, 8; Charles, 4; and Fred'k, 2. George and Susan were born in England, and the children were all born in New York. George's occupation is recorded as "Engineer."

Portion of 1850 U.S. Census record showing George, Susan and their family of seven children. The record was for Williamsburg Village, Kings County, New York.

George and Margaret Grimshaw

Apparently George, fourth child (second son) of George and Susan Grimshaw, remained in New York when the rest of the family migrated west to Wisconsin. Three of George and Margaret's daughters – Susan, Nellie and Fannie – worked as chambermaids in a New York City hotel. Most (or all) of George and Margaret’s family apparently subsequently migrated to Staten Island, New York. A possible photo of George and Margaret is shown below.

Possible photo of George and Margaret Grimshaw. Research by Trudell Wright indicates that this couple potentially could be George and Margaret.

George and Margaret and their family appear in the 1880 U.S. Census for New York living in Richmond County (Staten Island) as shown below (taken from a companion webpage):

Two photos of Nellie Grimshaw Craig, second child of George and Margaret Grimshaw - as a young woman and in her later years.

Trudell provided the following information on Nellie:

My cousin tells of Nelly marrying a William Craig, Uncle "Willie." Uncle Willie and Aunt Nelly had the following children. George Craig, born ab 1904 and died in Florida. Helen Craig, B 1903, married Frederick Huby. They had no children. Howard Craig, b 1907 d 1997, married Virginia Unknown and lived in Princeton, NJ. They had no children. Uncle Willie and Aunt Nelly had a third son, William. This William had 3 girls and a son, Richard. Richard died a young man working for the Staten Island Ferry, possibly of a heart attack.

Fannie Grimshaw was the third daughter of George and Margaret Grimshaw. Shown below are photos of Fannie (Grimshaw) Leyck and her husband, Frederick Conrad Leyck, Sr. Photos of Fannie, Frederick and their children are also shown below.

Trudell provided the following anecdotes on Fannie and Frederick:

What can I tell you about Fanny and Frederick? My cousin, Miss Blusch in a recent letter stated that "Nana and Grandpa used to go down to the Stapleton Park and get on a soap box and preach the gospel every night." She also remembers that "one room in their house was full of canary birds, over 100 of them. I think they used to sell them. Grandpa was very quiet and Nana was full of all don’ts."

The marriage certificate of Fannie and Frederick is provided below.

1880 Census Records of George and Susan Grimshaw and Their Children in Milwaukee

The 1880 U.S. Census for Wisconsin found George and Susan and most of their children living in Milwaukee. George and Susan were living with their daughter Susan in Milwaukee, as shown below (taken from a companion webpage). Susan, still possessing her maiden name, was engaged as a corset maker. A good deal of information on Francis (Hoystradt) Grimshaw and her ancestors going back four generations to Hendrick Hoystradt, who immigrated to New York from Germany in about 1710, is available in a publication on file at the LDS Family History Library1. This source shows William and Francis Grimshaw's children as George Grimshaw (born March 31, 1857 and died July 4, 1892) and Fanney Grimshaw, with a birthdate of February 4, 1861. If the 1880 Census ages for the children are correct, then the birthdate information in this source is incorrect. According to this source, Fanney married James Bailey on April 25, 1888. William Grimshaw's wife, Frances (sic), is shown as the daughter of Alvin and Maria (Hoystradt) Hoystradt, and the granddaughter of John H. and Eve (Dennis) Hoystradt.

Charles F. Grimshaw, second youngest son of George and Susan, was also found living in Milwaukee in the 1880 U.S. Census for Wisconsin, as shown below.

Gravesite of George and Susan Grimshaw

George and Susan are buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their burial plot is shared with their son, Frederick Grimshaw, and the former husband of Frederick's wife, Julia (Cox) Cartwright Grimshaw. This previous husband died in 1871 and was also named Frederick (Cartright). A monument was provided with inscriptions for the two Fredericks, but no notation is made for George or Susan Grimshaw. The following photos show the gravesite and other relevant features at the cemetery.

Was There Another Line of Grimshaws on Staten Island?

Trudell Wright found evidence of a separate line of Grimshaws living on Staten Island at the same time as George and Margaret Grimshaw and their children. The following ad appeared in a privately published cookbook2:

Subsequent research by the website author has confirmed the existence of an unrelated Grimshaw family line, descendants of William and Emily (Brown) Grimshaw, who lived on Staten Island. This family line is described on a companion webpage.

Additional Information from Patricia and Kathleen Craig

Possible Progress on George Grimshaw's English Roots?

Trudell Wright may have identified George Grimshaw's parents as William and Agnes Grimshaw, as indicated by the following posting on GenForum. George was born in London on July 10, 1810.

William and Agnes Grimshaw, London England Before 1810

Snuplily (View posts) Posted: 28 May 2009 3:22PM

Surnames: Grimshaw, Leyck, Holst, Blusch, Pfrommer

I am looking to connect with anyone who has information on William Grimshaw who married Agnes Unknown in England. Their son George was born on July 10, 1810 London England. This date and name, George also belong to my 2nd Great Grandfather. My George born July 10th in London England, married Susan Terrier, daughter of William Terrier (Tenier) and Penelope Earls, in London, England. Their first born daughter was named Agnes and their first born son was named William.

Hoping someone can help.

Trudell Wright
