Benjamin North Grimshaw

Probable Immigrant to Cleveland, OH from Shipley, Yorkshire in 1904

Roger Grimshaw called the website author in 2001 indicating he was a descendant of Benjamin North Grimshaw, who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, but no further information has been received. Immigration records on the Ellis Island website (see below) indicate that Benjamin arrived in the U.S. in 1904 from Shipley, which is in Yorkshire. Benjamin subsequently arrived in September 1913 (he was living in Cleveland by then) and was followed by his wife, Harriet, in November 1913.

Research on Ivan Gerould Grimshaw (see companion webpage) indicates that Benjamin North Grimshaw was possibly Ivan's uncle - an older brother of Miles Grimshaw (Ivan's father) and the son of William Roundtree and Maria (Holloingworth) Grimshaw. Miles Grimshaw and family arrived in the U.S. and settled in Akron, Ohio (after passing through Cleveland) in 1907. It seems likely that Benjamin Grimshaw preceded the Miles Grimshaw family, with immigration to Cleveland, by about three years.

Examination of the 1904 ship manifest indicates that 40-year-old Benjamin arrived from Liverpool on the Oceanic on September 20, 1904 with his 16-year-old son, Joseph. His final destination was North Dover, Ohio. He had previously visited the U.S. (Rhode Island) in 1884. He was apparently untruthful about his age (which should have been 48) when he reported it at 40 years old.

The 1913 ship manifest found 57-year-old Benjamin (he was closer to the truth of his age by 4 years) arriving on the Mauretania from Liverpool on September 26. His address was Myrtle Avenue, Warrens Vale, Cleveland, Ohio. He had been naturalized by the District Court, Northern District, Cleveland on August 17, 1912. Harriet Grimshaw arrived two months later, on November 28, on the Lusitania from Liverpool. She was from Shipley and was arriving to join her husband on Myrtle Avenue in Warrensville, Ohio.
