Albert Harvey Grimshaw was born on May 29, 1883 in Rhode Island, the son of Amos James and Anna (Austin) Grimshaw and grandson of Riley and Margaret (Briggs) Grimshaw (see companion webpage). Albert received his education from several schools, including North Carolina State (NCS) College, where he wrote a thesis entitled "Microscopic Research of Factors Varying Penetration of Dyes on Rayons and Kindred Fibres". He became an instructor at the New Bedford Textile School in 1917, and in 1925 he moved to the position of professor of textile chemistry and dyeing at NCS College, which he held for 24 years. He died in 1949 shortly after retiring and is buried in the North Burial Ground, Providence Rhode Island with his parents, Amos and Annie (Austin) Grimshaw, and his wife Bertha (LeCain) Grimshaw, who died a few years after Albert.

While at NCS College, Albert apparently donated a photocopy and microfilm copy of the indenture of apprenticeship document of his father, Amos James Grimshaw, to James Mather Daltry, to learn the "Art, trade, and business of a reed maker and Heald Knitter", which is now in the NCS University Libraries Special Collections Research Center. Also donated was a copy of the 1944 "Grimshaw Newsletter", which describes the lives of Grimshaw's classmates at NCS College. Copies of Amos Grimshaw's apprenticeship document have been obtained by Thad Grimshaw, and images are included on this webpage.

Albert's son, Austin Grimshaw, followed in his father's footsteps as an academic professional. He received a Ph.D. from the Harvard School of Business in about 1937 and was on the faculty of the University of Illinois and then Dean of the Business School at the University of Washington starting in 1948. The following brief biography appears in the description of the apprenticeship document now in the NCS University Libraries Special Collections Research Center. 

Rhode Island native Albert Harvey Grimshaw (1883 - 1949) received his education from the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, North Carolina State College, and the New Bedford Textile School. He was a pharmacist and wrestling coach before becoming an instructor in chemistry and dyeing at the New Bedford Textile School in 1917. In 1925 Grimshaw left New Bedford for North Carolina State College, where he served as professor of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing for 24 years. During this time, he published articles in almost all of the textile trade journals in the United States. He was a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and the American Institute of Chemists. In 1948, The N.C. State College Chapter of Delta Kappa Phi presented a large portrait of Grimshaw to the School of Textiles.

Grimshaw died shortly after his retirement in 1949.

A copy of Albert's thesis was obtained through inter-library loan, and a number of pages were scanned. The cover is shown below, followed by images of the title page and table of contents. Then the color photocopy pages with the textile samples are provided (pages 73, 75, 77, 79, 81, 83, 85, and 87). A copy of the thesis is provided below in two parts (it was apparently originally published in two volumes.)

The thesis was a systematic study of the factors affecting the uptake of dyes in textile fibers (rayon and related materials). Six different types of fibers (labeled Acetate Dupont, Bemberg, Celanese, Tubize, Viscose, and Xanthate DuPont) were tested with a number of dyes and under a variety of lab conditions. The thesis was produced in two volumes - a bound volume and a second volume as a three-ring binder.

While at NCS State, Albert Grimshaw apparently assisted a female student to become the first woman to earn an M.S. degree in the textiles department.

Albert Harvey Grimshaw is descended from the Riley and Margaret (Briggs) Grimshaw family line, which is described on a companion webpage. He was the son of Amos James and Anna (Austin) Grimshaw.  He is buried in Rhode Island with his wife, Bertha (LeCann) Grimshaw. A descendant chart for Riley and Margaret Grimshaw, taken from their webpage, is shown below. The top two look like the firm Amos James served his apprenticeship with - and perhaps the lower one is a son carrying on the family business.

Thad Grimshaw has obtained a copy of Amos James Grimshaw's apprenticeship document, which is shown below. Thanks to Thad for obtaining these important images. This document confirms that Amos was indentured to James Mather Daltry, as proposed above by Mavis Long. His indenture was for seven years and four months and was for apprenticeship in "reed making and heald knitting", which are described below the indenture document. Amos would have been about 14 years old when he began the apprenticeship; it is unknown if he completed the 7+ year term.

Mavis Long has prepared a transcription (edited by the author) of the Indenture document, which is provided below, with the portions comprising language of the form in italics and the handwritten portions without italics. Four words, all in one line, could not be read and are indicated by blank lines

This Indenture Witnesseth That Amos James Grimshaw

of Bolton in the County of Lancaster, aged twelve years and

upwards by and with the consent of his Father Riley ........

Grimshaw of Bolton aforesaid Taper (sic) of the one part ........

doth put himself Apprentice to James Mather Daltry of Over Darwen in

the said Country Read Maker and Heald Knitter of the other

part ..................................................

 

to learn his Art and with him after the Manner of an Apprentice to serve from the day of the date

hereof until he shall attain his full age of twenty one years

 

from thence next following to be fully complete and ended. During which Term the said Apprentice his Master

faithfully shall serve, his secrets keep, his lawful commands every where gladly do, he shall do no damage to his

said Master nor see to be done of others but to his Power shall tell or forthwith give warning to his said

Master of the same, he shall not waste the Goods of his said Master, not lend them unlawfully to any, he shall

not commit fornication nor contract Matrimony within the said Term, he shall not play at Cards or Dice Tables, or

any other unlawful Games whereby his said Master may have any loss with his own goods or others during the

said Term without Licence of his said Master shall neither buy nor sell he shall not haunt Taverns or Playhouses

nor absent himself from his said Masters service unlawfully. But in all things be a faithful Apprentice. he

shall behave himself towards his said Master and all his during the said Term. And the said James

Mather Daltry, for himself his heirs, executors and administrators doth here

covenant promise and agree to and with the said Riley Grimshaw his executor

and administrator ....................... his said Apprentice in the Art Trade and business of

a Reed Maker and Heald Knitter which he useth by the best means that he can shall teach and

shall and will well and duly pay or cause to be paid to the said Amos James Grimshaw during the first

year and four months of the said term the sum of five shillings Lodging and all other Necessaries

during the said Term weekly and every week during the second year of the said term the sum of six shillings weekly

and every week during the third year of the said term the sum of seven shillings during the

fourth year of the said term the weekly sum of eight shillings during the fifth year of the said

term the weekly sum of nine shillings during the sixth year of the said term the weekly sum

of ten shillings and during the seventh year and last year of the said term the sum of eleven shillings to

be _________ as aforesaid _________. Always and it is hereby _________ covenanted _________ agreed

by and between the said parties hereto that if the said Amos Grimshaw be absent from the services of

the said James Mather Daltry his executors or administrators by reason of sickness, neglect*

wearing apparel of all sorts both linen and woollen also aprons hats and shoes suitable for a person in his position

Reedmaking

A reed was like a metal comb whose teeth are secured top and bottom, used to hold the weft apart on a weavers loom. The reed, with its to and fro movement, 'beats' the weft thread into place (like a comb) as it is placed by the shuttle passing across the full width of the loom.

Reed makers would have been self-employed artisans, with probably an apprentice or two. In 1828 and earlier they would have supplied the local wool and cotton mills directly, later as things became more centralized, they would have supplied a Reed manufacturer who would then have sold them on to Mills all over Lancashire, and beyond.

Albert and Anna (Austin) Grimshaw's son, Austin Grimshaw, graduated from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in Business Administration in about 1937 (the date of his thesis). His thesis^3,4 was entitled "Some Problems of Line Expansion and Contraction in Selected Consumer Industry Companies Manufacturing Items Retailing at Under $10.00 Per Unit". Dr. Austin Grimshaw taught at the University of Illinois and in 1948 moved to the University of Washington, where he was appointed Dean of the Business School.

Dr. Grimshaw wrote at least two books, one on organization behavior⁵, published in 1955, and the other on problems of the independent businessman⁶, published in 1960. Images of the title pages from the two books are shown below.

An obituary for Albert has been found by Thad Grimshaw in the files of North Carolina State University and is shown below.

1929

Funeral services were held in Providence, Rhode Island, on April 22 for Albert Harvey Grimshaw, professor of textile chemistry and dyeing at State College, who died in Raleigh on April 20 of a heart ailment. Prof. Grimshaw served as instructor in chemistry and dyeing at New Bedford Textile School from 1917 to 1925 and coach of football, basketball and baseball at that school. He is generally credited with giving the school its first big start toward higher ranking in sports. A well-known amateur athlete and coach in the period before his departure from New Bedford in 1925, Mr. Grimshaw attained New England-wide renown as the player-coach of Grimshaw's Hawaiian Troupe, an un-orthodox and colorful group of athletes who indulged in wrestling, jiu-jitsu, pyramid building, singing and musical entertainment before and after the games and during intermission. The players, all students of the textile school, included four Hawaiians and Arsene Rousseau of New Bedford in addition to Mr. Grimshaw.

Born in Providence, R. I. May 29, 1883, he was graduated from Somerville High School where he played end on the football team and outfield for the baseball team. Following his graduation he studied at the College of Pharmacy, where he also played football. After work as a pharmacist in Keene, N. H., Winchester, and other cities, he went to New Bedford in 1911. He had coached wrestling in various YMCA's and immediately entered athletics at New Bedford, devoting much time to wrestling. In 1925 he left the New Bedford Textile School to assume a position on the faculty of N. C. State, becoming a full professor in 1939. He was head of the Department of Chemistry and Dyeing for many years until his retirement from that position several months ago. He conducted extensive research in the field of textiles and wrote articles for virtually every textile trade journal in the United States. He was a member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Chemists, and a number of honorary societies such as Blue Key, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Tau Sigma, Delta Kappa Phi, and Gamma Sigma Epsilon. The college chapter of Delta Kappa Phi, the professional textile society, honored Professor Grimshaw at a dinner last November and presented a large portrait of him to the college. The portrait now hangs in the School of Textiles at the college. Professor Grimshaw was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, N. C. State, and the New Bedford, Mass., Textile Institute.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Lecain Grimshaw of Raleigh; a son, Dr. Austin Grimshaw of the University of Illinois who is to assume new duties as Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington; a sister, Miss Margaret M. Grimshaw of Somerville, Mass.; one brother, Ralph Grimshaw of Fremont, Ohio.

Albert and Bertha Grimshaw are buried with Albert's parents, Amos and Anna Grimshaw, in the North Burial Ground in Providence, Rhode Island. The entrance to the cemetery is shown in the photo below.

The North Burial Ground is noted near its entrance by a boulder with inscription as shown below. The boulder, and flagpole behind it, can also be seen in the above photo just to the left of the car.

The back side of the gravestone of the Grimshaw family in the North Burial Ground is shown below. The plot is located in Block EJ; a cemetery map is required to locate the grave plot within a reasonable time. 

The front side of the monument indicates the presence of Albert and Bertha Grimshaw as well as Albert's parents, Amos and Annie, and two other individuals - Catherine (Grimshaw) Herman (Albert's and Bertha's daughter) and Elizabeth MacLaughlan.
