As a means of gaining as much insight as possible into the immigration of Grimshaws into North America, and their subsequent "radiation" (family growth and movement through succeeding generations), a survey was conducted of readily available (published) census indexes for the U.S. Indexes of censuses through 1860 were examined.
Summary Tabulation of Grimshaws in the Census Indexes

Although some data are available for prior years, regular censuses began in the U.S., by Congressional mandate, in 1790. A total of nearly 400 census indexes, extending from before the first "official" census in 1790 to 1860, were surveyed for this investigation.
The indexes examined are in the Genealogy Division of the Texas State Library, Austin, Texas, and the Pennsylvania Division of the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The indexes were generally surveyed in the order in which they are shelved at Texas State Library, which is by decade of the census and then by state (alphabetically) within each decade. Indexes at the Carnegie Library were reviewed to "fill gaps" –- indexes not held by the Texas Library.

The table below provides a summary of the number of Grimshaw entries found in each decade, shown generally in the order that they were found in the survey -- by decade, and then by sate, alphabetically. The total number of Grimshaws included in the census data increased from 2 before 1790 to 118 in 1860, the last census included in the survey. Grimshaws were found in 32 states over the 90-year period.
